Placement

Is Sci5 right for your child?

No prior physics, chemistry or biology is needed. What matters is curiosity and comfort with the math. Placement, not grade, decides where each student starts.

An honest fit

Who thrives at Sci5.

A great fit if your child…

  • Asks why things work the way they do
  • Enjoys puzzles, building or figuring things out
  • Is willing to be wrong on the way to being right
  • Can give 75–90 minutes a week to homework

Maybe not right now if…

  • This year’s schedule has no room for weekly practice
  • You’re looking for a drop-in activity rather than a step-by-step track
  • Your child would rather skip the math: we teach science with real math

Readiness for the Yellow belt

The math that helps.

Students starting the Yellow belt in January should be comfortable with:

  • Ratios, rates and unit rates (for example, miles per hour)
  • Percents, decimals and fractions
  • Solving one- and two-step equations such as 3x + 5 = 20
  • Reading and drawing line graphs
  • Converting between units (for example, minutes to hours)

Try these together

Three questions like those on our placement test.

If they feel comfortable, your child is likely ready for the Yellow belt. If not yet, a booster session can help.

Question 1

A recipe uses 2 cups of flour for 12 cookies. How many cups of flour are needed for 30 cookies?

Show answer

5 cups. 2 × 30 ÷ 12 = 5

Question 2

A plant grew from 20 cm to 26 cm. By what percent did its height increase?

Show answer

30%. (26 − 20) ÷ 20 = 0.30

Question 3

Solve: 4(x − 3) = 2x + 6

Show answer

x = 9. 4x − 12 = 2x + 6, so 2x = 18

The placement test

How placement works.

The test has two parts. A math check decides the starting point. A short science section gives us a baseline to measure growth from; it doesn’t affect placement.

  1. Join the list

We’ll send the placement test date and place.

  2. Take the test

    In December. Bring a calculator.

  3. Get your result

Within a week, with a clear recommendation for your child.

  4. Start the track

Join the January class, or start with a booster first.

Ready

Start the Yellow belt in January.

Close

A short conversation with us, then January or a booster first.

Not yet

A booster first to close the math gaps, then a retest.

Not quite ready yet?

Booster and summer prep.

Some students are strong in science but still building the math, or want to join the track a little later. We plan to offer booster sessions that close specific gaps, such as ratios, equations and graphing, so students can start or rejoin the track with confidence.

My child is strong in science but behind in math. Can they join?

Yes. Placement shows where they are, and a booster can close the math gaps first.

Does my child need to have taken science before?

No. Everything is taught from the beginning. What matters most is comfort with the math: ratios, percents, simple equations and graphs.

Do I need a science background to help at home?

Not at all. The best help is asking your child to teach you what they learned, and protecting a few quiet homework blocks each week.

Sounds like a fit?

Join the list and we’ll send the open house and placement test details as soon as they’re set.
